Why So Serious?

Why So Serious?

John Mulaney

Shows on Netflix:

  • Kid Gorgeous at Radio City
  • The Comeback Kid
  • John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch

This guy being the president. It’s like there’s a horse loose in a hospital. I think eventually everything’s gonna be okay, but I have no idea what’s gonna happen next. And neither do any of you, and neither do your parents, because there’s a horse loose in a hospital. It’s never happened before. No one knows what the horse is gonna do next, least of all the horse. He’s never been in a hospital before. He’s as confused as you are.

I don’t know what my body is for other than just taking my head from room to room. And it’s not getting any better. I’m 35, but I’m still like, “Hey, when I am going to get big and strong?” This is it. I’m like an IPhone, it’s going to be worse versions of this every year.

  • other than – кроме как
  • it’s not getting any better – оно не становится лучше
  • this is it – это все

As I get older, it's tough to not get grumpy. It’s tempting. I get grumpy about some things. Like, I can’t listen to any new songs because every new song is about how tonight is the night and how we only have tonight. That is such 19-year-old horsesh*t. I want to write songs for people in their 30s called “Tonight’s no good. How about Wednesday? Oh, you’re in Dallas on Wednesday? Okay. Well, let’s just not see each other for eight months and it doesn’t matter at all.”

  • tough – трудно
  • grumpy – раздражительный, сердитый
  • it’s tempting – это заманчиво
  • it doesn’t matter at all – это совсем не имеет значения

Taylor Tomlinson

Show on Netflix:

  • Quarter-Life Crisis

I am halfway through my 20s, and I am done with this sh*t. I’m so sick of people telling me to enjoy them. They’re not fun. They are ten years of asking yourself, “Will I outgrow this, or is it a problem? Like is this a phase or a demon? Am I fun, or should I go to a meeting?” […] And if you’re sitting there going, “Taylor, you should be grateful. I miss my 20s.” No, you don’t. What you miss is a time in your life where you didn’t have a lot of responsibilities because nobody expected anything from you. But do you remember why nobody expected anything from you? Because you s*cked! That’s what everybody forgets about your 20s. You were garbage, thinner garbage, but you were garbage.

  • halfway – на полпути
  • I am done –
  • I’m so sick of – меня так тошнит от
  • will I outgrow this – я это перерасту
  • responsibilities – обязанности
  • nobody expected anything from you – никто ничего от тебя не ожидал

I’ve had an amazing year. I got engaged. Thank you. It didn't work out with me and my ex-fiance, which is the most annoying word to say, by the way. It sounds like a spell. Just like, “Ex-fiance!” Sounds like Hermione up here, “It’s not ex-fiance, it’s ex-fiansuh.”

  • I got engaged –
  • it didn't work – это не сработало
  • ex-fiance – бывший жених
  • annoying – раздражающее
  • spell – заклятие

Dave Chappelle

Shows on Netflix:

  • Sticks & Stones
  • Deep In The Heart Of Texas
  • Equanimity & The Bird Revelation

I went into my oldest son's room. I was like, “Hello? Hello?” He was gone. And I’d never done this to him before, but for some reason, I just did it. I just looked through his sh*t. Just to see who this motherf*cker was becoming. I found these notebooks, and I started going through the notebooks, and there was all this wonderful poetry in them. It was his handwriting. I didn’t even know this n*gga wrote poems. Then I looked through his drawers, and I opened up his middle drawer, and I found his rolling paper. I looked down on this paper, like, “Oh, that’s where that poetry is coming from.” That sh*t broke my heart. I mean, I smoked weed, but I mourned my son’s innocence. I cried a little bit and I took this paper upstairs in my room, rolled some weed that I’d hide from my family. I got really high and then I got paranoid. So I put his papers back how I found them.

  • for some reason – по какой-то причине
  • looked through his sh*t – просмотрел его вещи
  • I mourned my son’s innocence –
  • I got really high –

I voted for Hillary Clinton, of course I did. I voted for her because I liked what she said vastly better than I liked what he said. To be honest with you, at that point, that sh*t was like watching Darth Vader do the “I Have A Dream” speech. That b*tch is mean as hell. […] Boy, it was hard voting for that sh*t. But it was the lesser of two evils.

  • I voted –
  • vastly better – гораздо лучше
  • to be honest – если быть честным
  • mean – злая, подлая
  • the lesser of two evils – меньшее из двух зол

Ellen DeGeneres

Show on Netflix:

  • Relatable

There’s nothing more embarrassing than when you pass up a slow driver to show them the proper way of driving, you go around them and show them how they should be driving, and then you hit a red light. And you’re watching them slowly creep up in your rear view mirror and you’re just, “Please change, please change.” And the light doesn’t change so they just creep up alongside of you. So I’m just gonna look down here and touch that.

  • embarrassing – стыдно, неудобно
  • pass up – объезжаете
  • creep up – подкрадываются

I get so much anxiety from the waiters that refuse to take your orders and write it down. They insist on memorizing your order. I don’t know why they insist on doing, like they’re impressing us in some way. Like, we’re gonna go home later that night, lying in bed, talking, “I still can’t get over that waiter!” […] If I see they’re not gonna write it down, I say, “Do you mind if I write it down and give it to you, and then you take it in the kitchen?”

  • anxiety – тревожность
  • waiters – официанты
  • refuse to take your orders – отказываются принимать ваш заказ
  • can’t get over – не в состоянии забыть
  • do you mind...?
